Asclepias syriaca, a noble fiber

Milkweed, a plant native to North America, produces a fibre of singular beauty, warmth, and lightness. We learned to cultivate it here, at home, and affectionately named it Canadian Botanical Silk.

Its softness and subtle sheen captivated us from the very beginning. Since its discovery in 2014, during a winter snowshoe walk on a bright day in the Lanaudière region, this fibre has profoundly changed the way we look at nature. That day, delicate silks emerging from the first snowfall floated gently in the air — a suspended moment, imbued with calm and beauty. Two days later, chance — or perhaps a sign — led us to discover a report describing the dream of turning it into an industry.

Over time, however, we came to understand that certain materials, by their very nature, invite an approach defined by rarity, restraint, and respect.

Despite its remarkable technical and ecological qualities, this delicate fibre cannot, except in rare cases, be used on its own. Experience has taught us that materials reveal their full nature through the alliances we choose for them.

Within the world of Maison Asclépia, we have chosen to unite milkweed exclusively with the finest natural fibres — wool, down, cotton, silk, hemp, and linen — sourced ethically and responsibly. In these carefully selected combinations, Canadian Botanical Silk expresses its full splendour: pure comfort, natural and timeless elegance, without artifice.

We have deliberately set aside other possible paths, not in opposition, but in fidelity to our vision. Each Maison traces its own path; ours is guided by coherence, simplicity, and sincerity.

At Maison Asclépia, we do not define ourselves as sellers, but as artisans close to the land, driven by the desire to create objects of comfort that are beautiful, durable, and deeply just. We are a Maison — the first to have carried this little-known richness from our fields to refined natural bedding pieces, without intermediaries, without spectacle, without pretension.

Over years of research and invention, we have come to understand that the rarity of this material reflects both its intrinsic nature and the conditions required to work with it with accuracy and responsibility. This approach does not claim unanimity — and we accept that — as it corresponds to our truth: that of a patient, responsible craft, attentive to the living world.

Since that winter day in 2014, milkweed has remained for us a symbol of natural elegance, humility, and connection. A fibre that invites us to slow down, to choose with care, and to create with restraint.
